GP Sound Waves

Which of the following statements about electromagnetic waves, sound waves and water waves is/are correct?

  1. The exhibit reflection.
  2. They carry energy.
  3. They exert pressure.
  4. They can travel in vacuum.

Select the correct answer using the codes given below

  1. 1, 2 and 3
  2. 2 and 4
  3. 1 and 3
  4. Only 1

Answer

The fourth statement is wrong because sound waves can’t travel in vacuum. Any wave carries energy and momentum and hence pressure.

An electromagnetic wave, although it carries no mass, does carry energy. It also has momentum, and can exert pressure (known as radiation pressure).

The correct option is A.
